Citation:

Served on board the U.S.S. Marblehead off Legareville, Stono River, 25 December 1863, during an engagement with the enemy on John's Island. Behaving in a gallant manner, Farley animated his men and kept up a rapid and effective fire on the enemy throughout the engagement which resulted in the enemy's abandonment of his positions, leaving a caisson and 1 gun behind.

General Scammon, a native of Whitefield, Maine, was appointed from his district to the United States Military Academy in West Point,  graduating 9th in the Class of 1837. Fought with Gen Burnside at Antietam - appointed brigadier general of volunteers in October 1862, and fought in the major actions of the Kanawha Division. Two future presidents ( Rutherford B. Hayes & William McKinley ) served under his command.
biography
His older brother Jonathan, also born in Whitefield, became one of the wealthiest men in America - a friend  and pallbearer to Abraham Lincoln.
Another brother, Charles Melville became the worlds most famous whaler and marine scientist / author .
The Scammon family lived on the Pittston road in Kings Mills.
