Effie and Theodore Scott before they were married

July 1941

  1. Sam and Carleton took a calf to Woodland. Sam, Carleton, Eddie and myself went to Calais. It rained hard. Horace is here.

  2. We churned. Carleton and myself went up to Eva’s; Sam and Eddie stayed to the store.

  3. Carleton and myself went over to Mrs. Leland’s. We went up to the store.

  4. Sam, Carleton, Eddie, Sherman, Genevieve, Jane and myself went to Pembroke. It was hot and we had a good time.

  5. Horace was down. Harry Grant was over. Carleton and Eddie went fishing; no luck.

  6. Bernard (Flood) and Darrell Frost were here for dinner. Horace was down. Loring Sadler and Kathleen Flood were here. It is hot again. Loring and Kathleen married on December 13, 1941

  7. Verna and Harry (Sadler) were here for dinner. Percy Hanson was here. Horace was down. Sam and myself went to Eva’s.

  1. Horace, Bernard and Paul were here. Carleton went up to the store.

  2. We churned 29 pounds butter. Carleton went to George Flood’s. Horace was here. Sam and Eddie went up to the store.

  3. We began haying. Sam and myself went to Woodland. Carleton and Bernard stayed with Darrell Frost.

  4. We got one load of hay in.

  5. Rain. Horace was here for supper. Carleton went to Calais with Raymond Flood. I went up and helped Doris.

  6. Rain. Bernard stayed all night. Eddie went home for the day. Doris, Maxine, Bernard and Paul were here.

  7. We got in two loads. Horace is helping hay. Sam, Eddie Carleton and myself went to Alexander to a show.

  8. We got in 7 loads. Carleton has got the asthma. Harry Grant was here.

  9. Horace and Harry Sadler were here for dinner. We got in 3 loads. Les Worrell was here.

  10. Horace was down. We got 2 loads in. It rained. Eddie went up to the store. Sam, Carleton and myself went up to Eva’s.

  11. We finished up haying. Eddie took the horse to the blacksmith shop. Sam. Carleton and myself went to Woodland.

  12. Sam, Carleton, Sherman and myself went to Calais. Sam went to Dr. Cobb’s and we all went to the pictures. Eddie kept house.

  13. Carleton went to the store, got the mail. Eddie went home for the day. Sherman was here. Ralph and Mrs. Smith were here. The Smiths were friends of Sam and Corice and lived in Pembroke.

  14. We went to Calais and to Effie’s. She came home with us. Sam had some pictures taken by Dr. Cobb (X-rays?)

  15. We went to Calais. Sam went to see Dr. Carleton stayed out to Mildred’s.

  16. Dr. Cobb took 10 pictures of Sam and 4 of Effie. Carleton stayed to Mildred’s. Eddie kept house.

  17. Sam and myself went to Woodland. Effie stayed to Arlene’s; and Carleton is still to Mildred’s.

  18. We put up beet greens. Eddie cut bushes. Bad thunder storm.

  19. Effie, Sam and myself went to Calais; Carleton came home; Effie stayed to Mildred’s. Carleton and Sherman went to the school.

  20. Sherman was here to dinner. Jennie and Maybelle were here and we all went up to Eva’s. Possibly Jennie Gillespie and daughter.

  21. I washed. Eddie put the wood in the shed. Sam and Carleton are some better. Doris, Maxine, Paul and Bernard were here.

  22. Horace was here. Carleton was to Bernard’s.

  23. Carleton went to Calais with Doris. Horace was down. Genevieve, Blanche, Doris, Maxine, Paul and Bernard were all here.

  1. Sam, Carleton and myself were to Woodland. Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Tibbetts and Sherman were here.


AUGUST 1941

  1. Sam, Carleton, Horace and myself went to Calais.

  2. Carleton went to Calais with Sherman. Eddie went to Calais. Horace was down.

  3. Eddie went home for the day. Sherman was here to dinner. Arlene, baby and Lawrence were here for supper.

  4. I washed. Mrs. Lee and two children from Baillie were here; also Eva, Roland, Melva, and Carl. Carl stayed down. Baillie is on the Fredericton Road, about 15 miles from St. Stephen.

  5. Sam and myself went to Calais. Carleton, Melva, Carl and Eddie kept house.

  6. I churned 25 pounds butter. Nelson, Ira, Sherman, Genevieve, Blanche and Horace all here. We got the oats in. Ira Leighton

  7. Carl and Melva went home. Sam, Carleton and myself went to Woodland. Eddie kept house.

  8. Sam and Eddie string off the blueberry land. We all went to Woodland.

  9. Sam, Eddie and myself went to Calais. Carleton went to Calais with Sherman and stayed all night with Sherman.

  10. Bernard Flood and Gerald Frost were down here to dinner. Eddie went home for the day. Sam and myself went down to Earl Frost’s.

  11. I washed. We went to Calais. Bill Lee, wife and family and Harry Burlen were out.

  12. Horace and Bernard were down. James Gillespie came out.

  13. We began to pick blueberries. Horace was down.

  14. Picked blueberries.

  15. Margaret, Dot, Winnie and Wallace were out. Horace was down. James Gillespie stayed here and picked blueberries.

  16. Sam and myself went to Calais to see the doctor. We met Effie and Theodore and had supper in the restaurant. Carleton, James and Eddie kept house.

  17. Horace was down. Carleton went over to Dyer’s. Margaret and Winnie were here.

  18. I washed. They picked blueberries. Lyman (Strout) and Marshall Berry were here.

  19. Picked berries. Doris, Maxine and Paul were here. Horace and Lyman were here. Effie came home with Doris.

  20. Buster (Holmes) and Paul Dwelley were here. Bernice, Beatrice, Vira, Effie, Sam and myself went to Mrs. Cousins’ funeral. Evie Keen Cousins was the wife of Charles Cousins of the Pokey Road in Alexander.

  21. We raked berries. Sam and myself went to Woodland.

  22. Raked berries. Horace was down.

  23. Raked berries. Sam, Carleton, Effie, Sherman and myself went to Calais.

  24. Eddie went home for the day. Horace was down.

  25. I washed. Effie cooked. Carleton and myself went to Calais. They raked berries.

  26. Sam, Effie and myself went over to Effie’s. Eddie, James and Carleton kept house.

  27. Leota and Bill came home. Effie, Bill, Carleton and myself went up to Eva’s. Horace was down.

  28. Sam and myself went to Woodland. James went home. Carleton went with us. Eddie and Effie kept house.

  29. Leota and Bill went home. Effie, Theodore, Arlene, Baby, Eva and Melva were here. Carleton has got asthma.

  30. We all went to Calais. Effie and Theodore stayed to Mildred’s.

  31. Bernard was down and Carleton went to Crawford with him. Mr. & Mrs. Morton, Beth & husband and Harl were here.

SEPTEMBER 1941

  1. Sam, Carleton, Eddie, Sherman, Bernard and myself went to Woodland (Labor Day Celebration) It rained, but good crowd.

  2. Horace was down to supper. Carleton is quite bad with the asthma.

  3. We churned. Eddie cut bushes. Bernard was down.

  4. Carleton, Sam and myself went to Woodland. Eddie cut bushes.

  5. Sam, Carleton and myself went over and settled up for berries. Eddie kept house.

  6. We went to Calais. Eddie did not come home with us.

  7. Bernard was down. All the Batrons were here. Mell and Steve Hunnewell were here. Horace was down. Melvin and Steve Hunnewell were brothers from the Tuf End of Alexander.

  8. Horace was down. Eddie cut bushes and Sam mowed bushes. I washed.

  9. Bernard and Horace were down. Eddie cut bushes. I put up corn.

  10. We churned. Bernard was down for dinner. Sam put wood in the cellar. Eddie cut bushes.

  11. Sam and Carleton took Eddie to Machias. We went to Woodland and down to Foster’s )Higgins’ in Milltown).

  12. Sam, Eddie and Lyman hauled straw from Princeton. I got 20 hens from Leota. Carleton went up to Bernard’s.

  13. Carleton went to Columbia Falls with Lyman and Marshall.

  14. Horace was down. Clara and Ray Bernard were here for dinner. Sherman and Bernard were here tonight.

  15. I washed. Lyman hauled straw.

  16. Sam, Lyman and Horace hauled straw from Princeton.

  17. Carleton and Eddie went to Machias. Sam, Lyman and Horace hauled straw from Princeton.

  18. Sam, Carleton and myself went to Woodland. Sam bought a covering for the kitchen floor.

  19. Carleton took the horse up to the blacksmith shop. Horace and Lorin were here. Sam, Carleton, Eddie and myself went over to Coburn’s.

  20. Sam, Eddie and myself went to Calais. Sherman, Bernard and Carleton kept house and slept in the camp.

  21. Eddie went home today. Horace was down. Bernard and Gerald Frost were here.

  22. Sam, Carleton, Eddie and myself went to Machias. Horace was down.

  23. Sam, Lyman and Albert Carlow hauled straw from Princeton. Carleton and myself were up to Eva’s and Arlene’s and over to Crawford.

  24. We churned 26 pounds butter. Sam went over to help with Dale’s lights. Dale was over, Horace was down, and Sam got a pig.

  25. Sam, Carleton, Eddie and myself went to Machias and then to Woodland. Carleton is better from the poison.

  26. Lyman and Albert were here after wood. Carleton went up to visit the Alexander school. Cedar School

  27. We got the beans all in. Horace was down. Mr. and Mrs. Moore were here.

  28. Eddie went home for the day. Horace was here. Sam, Carleton and myself went to Woodland.

  29. I washed. Lyman and Albert hauled wood. Horace was here for dinner. They gathered the squash and pumpkins.

  30. Eddie, Carleton and Papa got the corn in. I cooked. Horace was down.
