Toasting Whitefield: Bicentennial town meeting re-enactment
What were those early Whitefield town meetings like? Who got to vote? What were the pressing issues, hogs at large or the education of children? Come find out at a staged re-enactment on Fri., June 19 at the townhouse. The event, which begins at 7 p.m. sharp, kicks off the town’s Bicentennial celebration. Whitefield was incorporated on June 19, 1809. Taking part in the scripted action, which is loosely based on historic events and people of the period with a good dose of imagination besides, will be a dozen men and a few upstart females. (Women weren’t permitted to vote or even attend the meetings.) Local writer and stage director Doug Wright will be town clerk and moderator, and given the “Liberty Men” frontier mentality of the backcountry settlement, his character may claim other authority as well. The Bicentennial quilt and copies of the incorporation papers will be on display. Refreshments will be served afterward. |
